The Tennessee State Fairgrounds now houses 82 emaciated horses and two near-starved mules along its stalls, serving as a major rescue and recovery ward for the horrifically abused animals seized from a farm in Cannon County.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and United Animal Nations (UAN) is caring for the animals until they can be placed into equine rescue.
The case has prompted State Rep. Janie Sontany to seek stiffer penalties for the abuse and neglect of farm animals. Currently, the two men charged in the case only face misdemeanor charges. Sontany hopes to make farm animal abuse a felony charge, as it is with companion animals.
