Equine Rescue Effort Continues at TN State Fairgrounds

Meet Mr. Happy, a black-and-white spotted saddle horse. Not long ago, he was starving nearly to death, suffering in silence among 83 other horses at a farm in Cannon County, TN.

Thankfully, he’s in good hands now. Thanks to the rescue efforts of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), United Animal Nations (UAN), the TN State Fairgrounds and a host of donors and volunteers working around the clock to provide care, these neglected animals are now safe… and are well on the mend. Metro Animal Care & Control gets New Technology

If you called Metro Animal Control with a complaint about a loose dog or wild animal in your neighborhood in the past, chances were not good that anyone would show up to investigate. But in recent months, the city has dramatically improved its response rates by using new technology, training and new trucks. (more…)

Breaking News: Largest Dog Fighting Raid in U.S. History

On Wednesday, July 8, the ASPCA, HSUS and other organizations began assisting federal and state agencies in what is believed to be the largest crackdown on dog fighting in U.S. history. The raid spans eight states so far—Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Nebraska and Mississippi. Arrests have been made in all eight states. (more…)

Teen Arrested on Serial Cat Killings

CNN) — A teenager is being held on 19 counts of animal cruelty linked to a month-long killing spree of pet cats in the Miami area, police said. Tyler Hayes Weinman, 18, also is charged with 19 counts of improper disposal of dead animals and four counts of burglary, police said. (more…)

Police Raid Rutherford County Cockfight

Rutherford County police raided a cockfight near Christiana on Saturday, June 6. According to officials, Thathium Thathium was charged with cockfighting, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 11 months and 29 days in jail and a $2,500 fine, because he owned the home where the activities occurred. Bill is Deferred on Horse Slaughter Processing Plants

Today the ASPCA announced that HB 1428/SB 1898, the bill that would have facilitated the opening of horse slaughter processing plants in Tennessee, has been deferred for the rest of this year.

While the ASPCA expects this bill, or something similar, to reemerge in 2010, the horses are safe for now.

Alabama Dog Fighting Bust: 45 Dogs Seized

On Monday, June 1, a dog fighting operation in Randolph County, AL was raided by the state’s 5th Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force. The ASPCA dispatched forensic veterinarian Dr. Melinda Merck and their Mobile Animal Crime Scene Investigation Unit to collect evidence and to aid in the prosecution of the case. (more…)
