There is public outcry after a shocking chain of events in Williamsburg, KY last week. Local business owners had been feeding a friendly stray dog - a Great Pyrenees they’d named Bugsy - and decided it would be best to call animal control so officials could find a home for the sweet pooch. What happened, however, was horrifying. The animal control officer, instead, drove up and shot the dog, killing it. Had the locals known the dog’s fate, they would have taken rescue measures into their own hands, and are now speaking out against a system gone wrong.

Middle Tennesee’s own Big Fluffy Dog Rescue has stepped up by writing a formal complaint letter and starting a petition for the city to take action against the officer. You can make your voice heard by signing the petition here.

CHATTANOOGA TIMES FREE PRESS / A Hamilton Place mall pet store will find out in a matter of days if the Tennessee Department of Agriculture will allow it to keep selling pets or if violations to the state code of animal care could lead to the suspension of the store’s license.

A bill banning a controversial surgical procedure to alleviate excessive dog barking has been signed into law by Gov. Deval L. Patrick.
The bill, called “Logan’s Law” in memory of a show dog whose breeder had him devocalized and later gave him up, prohibits so-called “de-barking,” the cutting of an animal’s vocal cords to quiet the voice.

Tuesday night, Metro Council unanimously banned the outdoor/roadside sale of domestic animals, such as cats, dogs and small “pocket” pets within Nashville.
The bill was sponsored by councilwoman Karen Bennett of Inglewood, who is also the founder of Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary in Hendersonville. According to a statement she gave The Tennessean, the ban “should give some animals a better shot at healthy lives and reduce the number of situations in which people adopt animals that haven’t been treated properly.”

TEXT AND PHOTOS BY HEATHER DAVIS / NASHVILLE PAW MAGAZINE.
Meet Mr. Happy, a black-and-white spotted saddle horse. Not long ago, he was starving nearly to death, suffering in silence among 83 other horses at a farm in Cannon County, TN.
Thankfully, he’s in good hands now. Thanks to the rescue efforts of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), United Animal Nations (UAN), the TN State Fairgrounds and a host of donors and volunteers working around the clock to provide care, these neglected animals are now safe… and are well on the mend. The Tennessee State Fairgrounds now houses 82 emaciated horses and two near-starved mules along its stalls, serving as a major rescue and recovery ward for the horrifically abused animals seized from a farm in Cannon County.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and United Animal Nations (UAN) is caring for the animals until they can be placed into equine rescue.
The case has prompted State Rep. Janie Sontany to seek stiffer penalties for the abuse and neglect of farm animals. Currently, the two men charged in the case only face misdemeanor charges. Sontany hopes to make farm animal abuse a felony charge, as it is with companion animals.
For more information, read today’s article in The Tennessean.

The Humane Society of the United States applauds Tennessee legislators for passing legislation that requires basic humane care standards for dogs kept at abusive puppy mills, and requires that these mass dog producing facilities operate as legitimate businesses, subject to licensure and inspection. The Tennessee Commercial Breeder Act (H.B. 386/S.B.258) passed both chambers by wide margins of 93 to 3 in the House and 26 to 2 in the Senate. (more…)
