BY HEATHER DOWDY
When I first discovered Fi + Mimi dog beds on Instagram (via @fiandmimimakeadogbed), it was love at first sight. Our little 1907 cottage is bright and light, and our decor inspiration is rooted in simple, earthy Scandinavian style.
But most of the comfy dog beds on the market didn't match our style. They were dull and lifeless, or too boldly patterned and colored with cartoon designs. Some high-end beds were beautiful, but hard on the wallet. After all, most beds don't last forever with a pit bull! And I loved that Fi + Mimi beds are affordably priced, despite the passion and personal touch poured into each one.
So when I saw these stylish, simple dog beds wrapped in Mexican Falsa blankets... I swooned.
These natural fabrics and patterns pair beautifully with Minimalist, Scandinavian and Southwestern inspired home design, and are so comfy to boot.
The beds are designed and crafted in Westlake Village, California using beautiful, quality textiles from around the world.
Says maker and company founder Mindy Lamont, "Fi + Mimi was born out of a desire for dog beds that worked with the flow of my home. After searching for something that my dogs loved that didn't look awkward in the house, I woke up one day and decided to design my own. It was January of 2017."
Mindy chose to create a pillow-style bed because "they flow best with home interiors, looking like floor pillows that can be piled up next to the fireplace, at the foot of a bed, in a home office or outside by the pool."
According to Mindy, a bonus of covering beds in Falsa blankets is that they get better with age. "The more you wash them, the softer and fuller they become," she says. Snug pups and great style? Sign me up!
Of course, she points out that blanket beds are not the best option for dogs that are rough with their beds. For rowdier pups, Mindy suggests one of Fi + Mimi's thicker, heavyweight upholstery fabrics.
The bed inserts are covered in cotton and filled with a washable polyester filling that's spun to hold it's shape. Plus, the zipper cover is removable so you can wash them separately and replace either without having to replace both.
I also love that Fi + Mimi gives back to the community to help dogs in need.
Many of Fi + Mimi product lines support dog rescues across the country.
Says Mindy, "Many of our new lines are being designed under our Design and Rescue program, where dog lovers and their dogs work with us to select fabrics for a line to benefit their favorite rescue organization. To date, we've raised money for A Purposeful Rescue, Gunnar's Wheels, Chews Life Dog Rescue, Road Dogs & Rescue, Boise Bully Rescue and Mr. Bones & Co. We've donated beds to the fundraising efforts of others that have touched over 20 other rescue organizations too."
While the Mexican Blanket dog beds are my favorite, Fi + Mimi also offer additional product lines, so there is truly something for every style and preference.
Fi + Mimi's gorgeous collections include the Hygge Hound Collection and the Adventures in Dreamland Collection as well as the Indigo Grey Herringbone Flannel bed, which offers a more neutral palette and simple, elegant styling.
Most of the beds are 5" thick and are available in a variety of sizes, including 40x40", 40x30", 30x30" and 24x24".
Want to cover a bed you already have? Bed covers start at $39.99 and are a perfect way to freshen up an old bed. And if you prefer to buy the complete set (bed insert + cover), prices range from $74.99 - $109.99 for the various-sized blanket beds.
